In this era of energy transition, the Gambian Government seeks to electrify 100% of its communities by 2030 while preserving its natural environment.
👊 The Gambia's promise? "To increase its share of renewable energy up to 30% of total installed capacity."
In the North Bank region, Jinack Island hosts the Nuimi National Forest Park as well as two communities: the Kajata and the Niji. A protected area since 1977, Jinack Island was rejected from the original grid extension project due to environmental, social, and biodiversity major impact.
👉 Bottom line: the only considered mode of electrification is the installation of a green mini grid.
Alongside the National Green Mini-Grid Program (GMG), led by the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy, supported by UNDP, MRV Energy will be conducting a detailed feasibility study for a green mini-grid as well as an environmental and social impact assessment aimed at electrifying Jinack Island and its communities in a responsible and sustainable manner.
